Making an impact as an abrasive and industrious openside flanker, Darren was rewarded with selection for the Blues regional under 25's team. After two superb seasons with Pontypridd scoring 11 tries, and earning the Principality Player of the Month award for January 2011, Darren's huge potential was rewarded with the offer of a professional contract from Newport Gwent Dragons. Darren signed for the Dragons in May 2011, making his first appearance as a replacement against Aironi at Rodney Parade in September. Darren made a number of further substitute appearances before his first start for the Dragons came in the LV= Cup Pool game against Bath at Rodney Parade. At the beginning of 2012 Darren became a more regular starter for the Dragons with Danny Lydiate and Toby Faletau away on Wales 6 Nations duty. Darren even won his first regional man of the match award during this period for an impressive derby showing for the Dragons in the home league tie against Cardiff Blues in March 2012.
