Varley came through the famous St Munchins school in Limerick, where he won a Senior Schools medal in 2002. Varley went on to secure a contract with Munster and made his debut in May 2006. Varley would only appear for Munster twice in his first stint and joined Wasps in 2008 for a season. Varley only played four times for Wasps, but managed to score two tries, including one on his debut against Leicester Tigers. Varley returned to Munster for the beginning of the 2009-2010 season and immediately impressed, making 22 appearances during the season and playing in the Heineken Cup against Treviso. Varley started the 2010-2011 season in a similar vein of form and was thus selected for Ireland’s autumn tests squad, making his debut off the bench against Argentina.
