Cal describes himself as motivated, positive and hard-working – and those characteristics were all in evidence when he fought back from that terrible injury.
And the tight-head prop, who was included in the England U18s squad in 2018, has bounced back in impressive fashion to earn a contract with Sale Sharks and is dreaming of bigger things.
Born in Crewe but hailing from Nantwich, Cal went to Brine Leas High School before moving to Sandbach School.
Having started the game at the age of ten for Crewe & Nantwich RUFC, Callum has gone from strength to strength since his age-group debut in 2010.
And in 2017 he officially joined the Sale Sharks academy – where the mentoring and coaching of Neil Briggs proved a real boost in his progression as a tight-head prop.
Cal is quick to also give credit to his coach Andrew Pemberton at Crewe & Nantwich but it was only in 2016 that the youngster truly believed he could break through, when he graduated to Cheshire rugby.
The proudest moment of his career so far remains his U18s league debut for the Sharks.
