Cox began his rugby career in school-boy rugby, favouring the round-ball game in his earlier years before turning to rugby during his time at school. At the age of 18 he was chosen for the England schools set-up which led on to his selection for England under-18, U19 and U21 while becoming affiliated full-time with Sale Sharks, turning professional aged 19. He then spent six years in the first team Sale Sharks squad before signing, alongside fellow Shark Chris Leck, for Edinburgh Rugby in the summer of 2011.
