Gega became the first Albanian-born rugby union player to have featured in a major international tournament when he played for Italy at the 2016 Six Nations Championship.
He had two outings during last season’s tournament and went on from strength to strength since then, figuring as a regular starter and producing a big display in November 2016’s defeat of the Springboks.
In January 2017, he was included in the Italy squad for the 2017 Six Nations Tournament.
A major knee injury during the preparation of the 6 Nations forced him to miss the entire 2017/2018 sporting season.
As of December 2019 he has played 16 games for Benetton and has scored 10 points.
