Along with his coach, Eric Elwood, Johnny O’Connor is perhaps the most famous Galway rugby player in history. O’Connor’s finest moments came in the black and gold of Wasps where, in 2005, his performances earned him the prestigious title of Irish Rugby Unions Players Association player of the year. O’Connor earned his first Irish cap in 2004 against South Africa. In 2007, O’Connor ended his trophy laden stint with Wasps, where he won a Heineken Cup, and returned to his native Galway with Connacht. O’Connor has been a perpetual source of experience for Connacht since his return and is extremely popular amongst the Sportsground faithful.
