Muller made his provincial debut for the Natal Sharks in 2001, where his leadership and competent performances saw him selected to play for the Sharks a year later. Muller impressed enough for the Sharks to make his South African debut in 2006, in a test against Scotland. Muller was selected for both the 2007 Tri Nations and World Cup squads and had the honour of captaining South Africa against New Zealand in the Tri Nations. Muller represented South Africa 24 times before opting to join Ulster in 2010, where his solid performances saw him selected as the Northern Provinces team captain.
