After his father, Gerry, was on the bench for Munster’s famous 1978 defeat of New Zealand, it was almost inevitable that Denis Hurley would follow in his father’s footsteps and play for Munster. And, indeed, in 2006 Hurley made his Munster debut against the Scarlets. However, it wasn’t until the 2007-2008 season when Hurley was preferred over Shaun Payne at full back in Munster’s Heineken Cup victory over Gloucester that the Cork man really came to prominence. So impressive was Hurley, he retained his place in the side all the way through Munster’s successful 2008 Heineken Cup campaign. Since then, Hurley has made close to a century of appearances for Munster and has been chosen to train with the Irish Senior Squad on several occasions.
