Hawkshaw started playing rugby at the age of 6 and went on to represent Leinster's U17 side.
In 2019, he was included in the province's U20s squad and made 3 appearances.
He made his Leinster senior debut in Round 4 of the 2020–21 Pro14 against Glasgow Warriors.
In April 2021, Hawkshaw signed his first senior deal with the Irish side.
