Gumede represented the SA Schools team for the second successive season in 2018 after making a name for himself as a rising star in SA Rugby’s Elite Player Development programme.
At school level, he played in the U16 Grant Khomo Week, U17 Interprovincial Sevens and the U18 Craven Week.
In May 2019, he was named in the Junior Springboks squad for the 2019 World Rugby Championship.
January 2020 saw him being named in the Sharks squad ahead of the 2020 Super Rugby season.
