Regarded amongst his peers as one of the world’s foremost scrummagers, BJ Botha, along with Doug Howlett, has the potential to be one of Munster’s best foreign players.
Having played for the Sharks for seven years, the 25 times capped South African prop felt it was right to try his fortunes in Europe and signed for Ulster during the summer of 2008. Botha impressed the Ravenhill faithful with his powerful efforts in both the scrum and in the loose, so it was a huge blow to Ulster fans when Botha swapped Ulster for Munster.
Ulster’s loss is Munster’s gain, and Botha has been a vital player for Munster since he signed in May 2011. Botha made his debut as replacement for John Hayes against Scarlets at the old Musgrave Park.
He made the most appearances in the 2012/13 and 2014/15 seasons and won a grand total of 111 Munster caps, scoring four tries.
In January of 2016, Botha ruptured his ACL and was sidelined for the remainder of the season and he announced his departure from the side in May of the same year.
August 2016 saw Botha sign for Top14 side Lyon to replace injured Zaza Navrozashvili.
