Ormaechea started his career in Uruguay playing for Carrasco Polo Club and was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. He is the son of Uruguay legend Diego Ormaechea, Uruguay's greatest ever player. He holds the record of being the oldest player ever to play in the Rugby World Cup in 1999.
In June 2013, he moved to France to play for Stade Montois. He spent 6 seasons (2014-2020) playing for the French Pro D2 club playing a mammoth 122 matches scoring 10 tries.
Ormaechea has also played sevens for Uruguay. In 2011, he played rugby sevens at the Pan American Games. In 2013, Ormaechea was part of Uruguay's squad for the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens
Agustin Ormaechea was selected to represent Uruguay in the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
In 2020, he signed for Nice and has played 30 matches starting 14 since he has arrived.
Agustin Ormaechea is one of the more experienced players in the Uruguayan squad with 8 Rugby World Cup appearances.
Ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2023, Ormaechea has been named in the squad for Uruguay.
