A former member of the back-row, Coombs has been shifted into the second row for this region, the Dragons and the switch has proved a fruitful career move for the man from Merthyr Tydfil.
The 31-year-old has established himself on the domestic scene and is well capable of stepping up to the international stage despite being relatively short for the second row by international standards, standing at just 6 foot 4 inches.
Coombs announced his immediate retirement from rugby after being medically advised not to return to action after a knee injury.
