Fraser McReight Re-Signs With Queensland and Australian Rugby

The Queensland Rugby Union and Rugby Australia are delighted to announce the re-signing of flanker Fraser McReight on a new three-year deal through to the end of 2028.
The news is of massive significance to Australian rugby on the eve of a blockbuster clash between the Queensland Reds and NSW Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.
McReight, Harry Wilson, Matt Faessler and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto have now all inked new deals over the past three weeks in a strong vote for the quality of the rugby program being run by the Reds.
McReight, 26, has hit the new season in strong form after a stellar 2024 in which he was named the Australian Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year for the second straight season. He also received the Pilecki Medal, on the vote of his peers, as Queensland’s best player and received the RUPA Medal for Excellence.
McReight played eight Tests for the Wallabies in 2024 and stamped himself as a world-class openside flanker. He combines a tremendous work ethic with tenacity at the breakdown, strong ball-carrying skills and the link play of the very best.
A product of the Australian Rugby pathways, McReight was an Albany Creek Brumbies junior and was educated at Brisbane Grammar where he was selected for the Australian Schools side in 2016.
He went on to captain the Junior Wallabies to their first Oceania Under-20s title in 2019 and to the final of the World Under-20 Championships in Argentina later that year.
McReight made his Super Rugby debut for the Reds that same year against the Brumbies at Suncorp Stadium and received his first cap for the Wallabies in 2020 against the All Blacks in Sydney, becoming Wallaby No. 937.
He has represented Queensland on 77 occasions and been capped 25 times for the Wallabies.
Queensland Reds and Wallabies flanker Fraser McReight said: "I'm very happy to have my contract resolved for the next three years. I can concentrate on those good times ahead with the Reds, the Wallabies and my teammates.
"There were other offers but my heart has always been with the Reds and the Wallabies. Queensland is my home and it means so much to represent my family and friends. Playing for your country is the highest honour and you get to represent where you come from with pride."
McReight said he had spoken openly with close friends Wilson and Faessler before making his decision. Their own recent re-commitment to the Reds and Wallabies was part of his reason for re-signing early in the season.
"There are some huge events ahead in rugby in this country. As a nation we are rebuilding and I want to be part of that," McReight said.
"At the Reds, we know we are really well coached and have taken our game forward from the foundations we built last year.
"We can express ourselves without fear as players and I enjoy my attacking brain taking me there.
"Joe (Schmidt), at the Wallabies, is also huge on those foundations of strong core skills."
McReight chose his alma mater, Brisbane Grammar, for a series of photos to announce his re-signing.
"I have a lot of key memories from my days there and best mates from my school friendship group. It's where I became an adult and built my work ethic," McReight said.
Reds head coach Les Kiss said that McReight's signing was a significant one for Australian rugby.
"Fraser is not only one of the world's best openside flankers, he has a really positive influence within the locker room and has taken on extra leadership responsibilities," Kiss said.
"The re-signing of Harry Wilson, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Matt Faessler and now Fraser is great news for the Reds for years to come and it is the same for the strength of the Wallabies.”
Rugby Australia’s Director of High-Performance, Peter Horne said: “Fraser continues Australian Rugby's reputation of developing strong openside flankers and we are excited to keep him with the Wallabies and Reds for a further three years through 2028.
“He has established himself as a regular member of the Wallabies squad and we hope he will continue to play a pivotal role as we approach an extraordinary runway of major events at home, starting with this year’s British and Irish Lions tour.
“Like his Reds backrow teammate Harry Wilson, Fraser is entering his prime years as an international player and his commitment to Australian Rugby extends beyond the Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027.”
