The Highlanders take a 22-17 lead over the Blues into halftime after a sea-saw first half. The Blues opened the scoring with an early try to lead 7-0. The Highlanders got on the board with a penalty and shortly after got their first try to lead 10-7. The Blues then picked up a yellow card around the midpoint of the half and the Highlanders capitalized immediately with a try to make it 15-7. A Blues try around the half hour mark saw them trail by a single point before a late first half penalty took them in front 17-15. However, there would be time for the Highlanders to run in their third try with the final play of the half to take a five point advantage into the break.
