Eng take a 16-12 lead over Aus into halftime. Aus opened the scoring with an early penalty, but Eng hit back with the game's first try to lead 7-3. A flurry of penalties followed as the sides alternated two apiece to see Eng up 13-9 midway through the half. Aus picked up a yellow card around the half hour mark and the resulting Eng penalty made it 16-9. Aus marshalled the sin bin period well and added a late penalty to trail by just four points at the break.
