Coming out of Merensky High School in Tzaneen Van Staden went on to represent UP Tuks and NMMU Madibaz in the Varsity Cup as well as TUT Vikings in the Varsity Shield between 2010 and 2013
He also represented the EP Kings, SWD Eagles and Blue Bulls in the Vodacom Cup before he settled at the Pumas in 2014 and helped the side to a victorious Vodacom Cup campaign in 2015.
