A powerful hooker Makelara spent time with Bassano Rugby and went on to represent the U17 Italy side.
In 2014 he was called into the Italy under 20 side but had to pull out of the Junior World Championship due to injury.
He was selected in the U20 side for the 2016 Six Nations tournament and the 2016 Junior World Championship.
He moved to Petrarca Rugby for the 2016/17 season and made 12 appearances, scoring one try.
In June 2017 he signed for Benetton Rugby for the 2017/18 season
On 4 February 2019, Makelara was named in Italy's squad for the 2019 Six Nations.
