The Thurles native represented Munster at U-18, U-19 and U-20 level.
JP Cooney is a versatile front rower able to play at either side of the scrum. JP joined Connacht in the 2013/2014 season.
Cooney has signed with the Connacht Senior squad for the 2016/2017 season. The Garryowen club man will continue his progression under Pat Lam, having made 8 appearances off the bench in the 2015/2016 season.
With five seasons at the Sportsground under his belt, 27-year-old prop Cooney, who can play on both sides of the scrum, has further extended his stay with Connacht for the 2017/18 season.
The Tipperary man featured in 22 games for the province this season and made his 50th appearance against Munster at Thomond Park in May 2017.
At the end of the 2017/18 Cooney was released from the club having not featured for the side entire season.
