Thomas has represented Wales at U18 and U20 level. Thomas played for Blackwood RFC, Ebbw Vale RFC, the Newport Gwent Dragons U20 regional team and Newport RFC.
Thomas made his debut for the Newport Gwent Dragons senior team against Sale Sharks on 6 November 2009. He was named in the Wales U20 Squad for the 2010 U20 Six Nations tournament. In May 2010, he was selected in the Wales Under 20 Squad for the Junior World Cup in Argentina in June 2010.
The 23-year-old has played for Gwent sides Ebbw Vale, Pontypool, Newport and moved to Bedwas in 2012. Newport Gwent Dragons signed James Thomas in 2014. The Newport born back rower, who can also play second row, was rewarded with a long term contract, after initially being given a one year deal.
