Born in Pretoria, du Plessis attended Affies High School and represented the Bulls and Sharks through the age group levels of his career. He never settled at any South African union and was somewhat of a journeyman before securing a move to Toulon in 2015 on a 3 month deal as a World Cup/Medical Joker.
He soon after joined Bayonne on a similar deal before signing a 3-year permanent contract at the beginning of the 2016/17 season. Bayonne released du Plessis on loan to Montpellier for the remainder of the season where early in the year where he has starred for his new side taking them to 3rd spot on the table at the end of the regular season.
