Prendergast attended Newbridge College, where he played rugby and captained the Leinster schools team. He also had an interest in Gaelic football and represented Suncroft. Notably, he has a younger brother named Sam Prendergast, who is currently playing for Leinster Rugby and the Ireland U20 Six Nations Team.
In the summer of 2020, Prendergast joined the Connacht academy. He made his senior debut for Connacht in October 2020 during Round 3 of the 2020-21 Pro14 against Edinburgh. His performance earned him recognition, and in March 2021, Connacht announced that he had signed a professional contract with the club. In May 2022, Connacht further solidified their faith in Prendergast by extending his contract until 2025, with one year still remaining on his previous deal.
Prendergast's skills did not go unnoticed on the national level. He was included as a development player in the Irish squad for the 2022 Six Nations Championship. In June 2022, he was selected for the Ireland squad for the 2022 tour of New Zealand, showcasing his potential as an emerging talent.
In November 2022, Prendergast achieved a significant milestone by earning his first full cap for Ireland in a test match victory against Fiji. This marked an important moment in his international career. In January 2023, he was named in Ireland's squad for the Six Nations, further demonstrating his growing stature in the national team setup.
Cian Prendergast continues to develop his skills and make strides in his rugby journey, both with Connacht in the United Rugby Championship and the Ireland national team. He was named as Connacht captain ahead of the 2024/25 season
