Hawkey joined the Crusaders Academy at the beginning of 2016, after he top-scored for Celtic in the South Canterbury senior club competition with 207.
He previously spent two years in the Timaru Boys High School First XV. Hawkey currently has got a provincial union development contract with Makos.
The 21-year-old played his way to the fringes of the Tasman Makos and made a star turn in one of the two preseason hit outs.
