Nicknamed Alfie, Gareth Thomas is one of the most-capped Welsh players of all-time, making 100 appearances in all.
He was only selected for one Lions tour, the 2005 trip to New Zealand and, following an injury to Brian O'Driscoll in the opening minutes of the first Test against New Zealand, was made captain for the second and third Tests, becoming the ninth Welsh skipper in Lions' history.
He crossed for a try in the second Test in Wellington but the All Blacks, inspired by Dan Carter, secured the series win over the Lions.
He once scored four tries in an international match against Italy and scored the longest interception try ever seen at the Arms Park, a 90-metre dash against Australia in 1996.
He started playing with club side Bridgend and played for Cardiff, Celtic Warriors and Toulouse during a 16-year club career.
