Rugby Club Vannes officially annouced the signing of Mako Vunipola after he committed to the French side for two seasons, until 2026.
Vunipola (1.80m, 33 years old) is the fourth most capped player in the history of English rugby with 79 caps. Mako Vunipola joins the club from Saracens, with whom he has experienced and won practically everything.
Born in Wellington New Zealand, he is of Tongan origin and his father, Feʻao Vunipola, a major figure in Tongan rugby, took his family on the road, and it was in Wales that Mako Vunipola grew up before settling in England.
He began his professional career at Bristol in 2010/11. The following season, he headed to North London and signed with Saracens. In 13 seasons and 232 matches in the Sarries jersey, he built up one of the most impressive records in European rugby: he won the English championship five times (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2023) and the Champions Cup three times (2016, 2017, 2019).
His performances at club level quickly opened the doors to the English national team. He earned his first cap at the age of 21, and had a rich career in the XV de la rose jersey. He won the Six Nations Tournament three times (2016, 2017, 2020), including a Grand Slam in 2016. Mako Vunipola also took part in two World Cups (2015 and 2019, during which England was beaten in the final by South Africa).
A true legend of English rugby, Mako Vunipola had the honour of completing three tours with the very prestigious British Lions team (2013, 2017, 2021).
By signing with RC Vannes, Mako Vunipola will have his first experience abroad and discover the Top 14. We look forward to welcoming him among us very soon.
Welcome to Brittany Mako.
