Talking Points: Russia vs Samoa

Samoa became the first Pacific Nation to register a win at the 2019 Rugby World Cup as they swept aside Russia 34-9 at the Kumagaya Rugby Stadium. 

Manu Samoa scored six tries against a stubborn, yet brave Russian outfit,who managed to kick two penalties and slotted an impressive drop goal. 

The win sees Samoa join Ireland and Japan on five points in group A and here are a few talking points from today’s match. 


Samoan Discipline

Unfortunately if Samoa are to want to move into the knockout phase of the competition they will need to improve their discipline on the field. The Islanders at one point had two players yellow carded for dangerous tackles and some will feel they got off a little light.

Samoa’s Deadly Wingers

Ed Fidow and Alapati Leiua scored two tries a piece against the Bears and also ran a combined total of 229 meters. Leiua, who made 163 meters on his own, managed to beat 10 defenders and made three clean breaks. Fidow was also very impressive as he made 96 meters, beat nine defenders and finished the game off with two clean breaks. 

Four Day Turnover Really Hurt Russia

Russia played their second game in four days which clearly hurt them physically and mentally. World Rugby will really need to have a look at how they schedule games. The likes of the USA, Canada and Uruguay are yet to play their first match while Russia and Fiji are playing their second this week. 

Another Impressive Performance From Gadzhiev

The Russian flanker had another impressive performance for his national side and could be well on his way to play in one of Europe’s premium competitions. The No. 6 made 14 tackles in the game and also carried the ball up field on nine occasions. 

We really think the 25-year-old will end up playing in the Top 14, Premiership or even in the Pro 14 at some point.
