Super Rugby Countdown Day 16: Most Penalty Goals in a Match
- 2207
Some players' boots are more generous than others. Here's a look at the players who've scored the most penalty goals in a single match:
Elton Jantjies (9)
25/02/2012
Lions vs Cheetahs
A stellar all-round performance from Elton Jantjies whose boot guided the Lions to a 39-22 victory against the Cheetahs in Johannesburg.
Jannie Kruger (8)
18/03/2006
Stormers vs Cheetahs
Kruger has cemented his place in the all-time records with his 8 penalties against the Cheetahs in March 2006.
Willie Walker (8)
21/02/2003
Highlanders vs Chiefs
Flyhalf Willie Walker kicked eight goals from nine attempts to lead the Otago Highlanders to a 29-16 win over the Waikato Chiefs in the first match of the Super12 season that year.
The teams scored a try apiece but Walker's unerring goalkicking, punishing Chief's indiscipline, marked the difference between even sides.
Meyer Bosman (8)
18/03/2006
Stormers vs Cheetahs
Derick Hougaard (8)
12/05/2007
Bulls vs Crusaders
For the Super 14 semi-finals that year, the Sharks then hosted the Blues in Durban, and the Bulls hosted the Crusaders in Pretoria. This was the first time both semi-finals had been hosted in South Africa. The Sharks defeated the Blues 34-18 with three tries to two, and the Bulls, thanks to Derick Hougaard, defeated the Crusaders 27-12 in a try-less match.
Matt Toomua (8)
06/03/2021
Rebels vs Brumbies
This clash saw then-skipper Matt To’omua boot eight from eight penalties.
They were locked at 24-24 on the full-time siren when the Brumbies won a penalty inside their own half, with Lonergan stepping up to attempt a kick at an angle and in a swirling breeze, mobbed by his teammates after it dipped over the bar.
A dogged ACT Brumbies battled past the Melbourne Rebels 27-24 to maintain their unbeaten start to the Super Rugby AU that season.
