Super Rugby Countdown Day 14: Most tries scored in a match by a team

Whether it's too much power, too much precision or simply put, too much prowess, some teams have produced wrecking balls who've managed to be regular visitors of the try-line.

Here's a look at the most tries scored in a match by a team:

Crusaders vs Waratahs (14 tries)

May 11, 2002, is officially on record as the darkest day in Waratahs history following an infamous 96-19 defeat to the Crusaders in Christchurch.

The Crusaders and Waratahs went into the game as the two best teams in the competition. The home side were unbeaten through 10 games while the Waratahs suffered just their second defeat a week earlier to the Reds. The Waratahs had the best defence in the competition, averaging less than 19 points a game.

A week later the Crusaders scored 62 less points in beating the Highlanders in their semifinal clash. The Waratahs were once again humiliated by the Brumbies in Sydney. In the final the Crusaders claimed a fourth title winning 31-13.

Cheetahs vs Sunwolves (14 tries)

In April 2016, hosts Cheetahs scored 14 tries in their 92-17 win against Sunwolves in Bloemfontein.

Despite taking an early lead through a penalty by playmaker Tusi Pisi, the Sunwolves let in seven tries by halftime to trail 45-3.

Wing Sergeal Petersen completed his hat trick in the 74th minute, scoring between the posts after one of countless clean backline breaks by the Cheetahs.

The day saw the Cheetahs score the highest number of tries by a South African team in Super Rugby, and equalled the competition-record 14 tries by New Zealand's Crusaders against the NSW Waratahs in 2002.

Lions vs Sunwolves (14 tries)

Lions showed their entire array of skills to batter the Japanese Sunwolves into submission with a thumping 94-7 victory in their Super Rugby clash at Ellis Park in 2017.

The Lions ran in 14 tries to equal the tournament record for a single game as they picked apart the dismal defence of the visitors.

Wing Ruan Combrinck scored a hat-trick of tries for the home side, to go with braces for loose forwards Jaco Kriel and Kwagga Smith.

Remarkably, none of the 101 points scored in the match came from penalties.
