The second game of Round 9 of the Super Rugby AU kicked off between the Waratahs and Rebels at the Leichhardt Oval. Rebels returned from a bye while the Waratahs suffered a 38-11 loss in round 8 to the Brumbies. Will Harris was ruled out of today's game and was replaced by Hugh Sinclair on the bench. The game started with the Waratahs kicking off but the Waratahs chasers immediately knocked the ball on and a scrum was awarded to the Rebels in the first minute. Rebels won early penalties in the game and in the 3rd minute To'omua opened the scoring kicking a three pointer. Gordon continued his sublime form and scored in the 6th minute after sniping around the ruck to score under the posts. To'omua missed his first kick in the 9th minute after the ball hit the posts. Dempsey scored in the 22nd minute to extend the Waratahs lead. Hanigan was yellow carded in the 36th minute after repeated infringements in the maul. To'omua made a brilliant run and broke the defensive line to bring the Rebels within 4 points. Harrison, however, ended the first half extending the Waratahs lead with a kick at goal.Rebels got the second half underway with try in the 45th minute from Naisarani who scored from the back of a rolling maul. Johnson-Holmes scored in similar fashion as the Waratahs first half tries as he went over to score in the 49th minute. A brilliant switch play between Harrison and Hooper gave Walton space to accelerate to cross over to score in the 56th minute. Rebels launched a fight back but the Waratahs managed to hold off the threat and seal the win as they head into a bye weekend. Phillip was yellowed carded in the 65th minute after impeding the jumper. To'omua in the 76th minute secured the losing bonus point by kicking a three pointer. A tough weekend awaits the Rebels as they take on the Western Force which is a must win clash.
