Super Rugby Aotearoa: Top Five Players Of The Day

The Hurricanes will need a favour from the Highlanders on Sunday and the Blues next if are to win the Super Rugby Aotearoa competition but they did their part on Saturday claiming a 31-18 victory over the Chiefs.

Warren Gatland's side finished their campaign without a single win but his side was certainly up for the fight.


We take a look at the top five players from the day's action.   


Jordie Barrett - Hurricanes

Barrett has been in sensational form for the Hurricanes since his return from injury and he was no different against the Chiefs.


He may not have been as accurate from the tee as he would have liked but played a big role in result nonetheless.

He made over 40 running metres and step into the first receiver role brilliantly.

He set Vince Aso away in the build-up to Dane Coles' try, drew in three defenders in the build-up to Billy Proctor's try and was solid in the air.



Peter Umaga-Jensen - Hurricanes

Some direct and hard running mixed with some great support and running lines saw Umaga-Jensen grab a brace in the first half.

He finished the clash with just over 20 running metres but was solid in defence and constantly kept the Chiefs' defence guessing alongside Vince Aso.


Sean Wainui - Chiefs

The Chiefs' flyer was rewarded for his efforts against the Hurricanes.

The biggest threat on attack for Warren Gatland's side, Wainui beat three defenders on his way to a match-high of 86 running metres.

Jackson Garden-Bachop

Garden-Bachop has been outshone by the likes of TJ Perenara and Jordie Barrett in recent weeks but on Saturday he produced another performance well worth a mention.

He was on point with his kicking game and combined well with Perenara who also had a great game.



Garden-Bachop picked up two try assists, one for Dane Coles and the other was an excellent crossfield kick to Kobus van Wyk while he also did brilliantly to put Peter Umaga-Jensen in the build-up to the centre's second try.


Du'Plessis Kirifi

The busy openside flanker won two turnovers against the Chiefs and edges his fellow back rower Ardie Savea to a place in our top five players of the day.

He showed off his aggressive ball carries putting Kaleb Trask on his bottom and made all of his tackle while making his presence known in the rucks.
