The club v country difficulties facing Philippe Saint-André were laid bare when the France head coach was obliged to confirm that his preferred fly-half, Camille Lopez, had withdrawn from selection on Wednesday night after coming under pressure from his club, Clermont Auvergne, to rest his knee.
Saint-André insisted that Lopez had trained perfectly well that morning, without strapping, and had come through a kicking session without any problems as well, only to receive a message from club officials advising him to pull out.
