SA Rugby President responds to Six Nations report

The President of the South African Rugby Union, Mark Alexander, has admitted that the Springboks could consider a possible move to the Northern Hemisphere, joining the Six Nations after the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

The Daily Mail reported that negotiations have been going on for some time for South Africa to join the Six Nations the showpiece in France in 2023 with secret talks having been ramped up following the Springboks’ triumph in Japan.

While there had been no official word in the immediate aftermath since the report’s publication, Alexander has commented on the story, speaking to respected South African journalist Brenden Nel.

Alexander suggested that the article was pure speculation but did admit the reports are also ‘not too far from the truth because there is a lot of disruption in rugby right now’.

‘It’s going to be a year of disruption, even more so as when rugby turned professional,’ Alexander told Rapport. ‘SA Rugby has not yet made a decision about what route to follow. We have to reflect thoroughly about what is best for us, because things are changing drastically at the moment, the market is changing.’

The rapport also linked World Cup-winning head coach Rassie Erasmus with the England head coaching role, replacing Eddie Jones.
