Rugby Mourns Nick Koster’s Untimely Death

Nick Koster, who was born in Robertson, came through the Western Province rugby rankings, having made the WP Craven Week side in 2006 and 2007 when he was captain. Nick Koster, who was arguable one of the greatest schoolboy talents the game as ever seen, was also called up to feature for the South Africa Schools in both 2006 and 2007.

The talented loose forward would go on to make his Currie Cup debut for Province in 2008, while playing extensively for the Stormers and Western Province between 2008 and 2012.

He then headed overseas to play for Bath and Bristol, while later captaining the Cambridge University R.U.F.C. as his career wound down.

On Wednesday, news tragically came to light that the 34-year-old had passed away, with former Springbok assistant coach Gary Gold sharing his condolences among a host of other tributes that began to flood in.

“Absolutely devastated to hear the news of Nick’s passing,” Gold wrote on Twitter. “One of the best schoolboy rugby players to have ever played the game and an outstanding person and friend. You will be sorely missed Nick. RIP buddy!”

Koster’s cause of death is not known at this point.

English club Bath has also passed on its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Nick Koster, following confirmation of his death at the age of 34. 

“Bath Rugby is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former player Nick Koster,” the club said.

“Nick, 34, joined the club in 2012, making 11 appearances in Blue, Black and White.”

“Everyone at Bath Rugby would like to extend their heartfelt sympathies to Nick’s family, friends and teammates.”

“He will be sorely missed and will always remain part of the Bath Rugby family.”

“Rest in peace, Nick.”
