Premiership Wrap-up: Round 2
- 2066
Leicester vs Gloucester:
Leicester Tigers made it two from two on Friday evening with a 7-point victory over Gloucester at Kingsholm. The Cherry & Whites showed determination in the opening exchanges but the boot of George Ford saw the Tigers maintain a lead on the scoreboard. With the score at 13-0, Gloucester clawed their way back into the game with a try and a penalty before Leicester dotted down their second. There were good signs in attack from both sides as the tries piled up and Skinvington’s men had the chance to tie the game in the final moments with the score at 33-26 but Leicester held their opponents off the try line with great work from the forwards.
Wasps vs Bristol:
Wasps began their Premiership campaign with a comprehensive 44-8 home win over the Bristol Bears in Round 2. Bristol opened the scoring with an early penalty, with Wasps missing a shot at goal shortly after. Wasps went over for the game's first try 12 minutes in and added a penalty midway through the first half to lead 8-3. Wasps then picked up a yellow card after 24 minutes, with Bristol scoring a try around the half hour mark to level matters at eight apiece. Wasps edged ahead with a penalty a few minutes later before scoring try number two as they took a 16-8 lead into halftime. Five minutes into the second half Wasps took control of the match with their third try to lead 23-8, which they held heading into the final quarter. Wasps ran in the bonus point fourth score with around 15 minutes remaining to push their advantage out to 30-8. Despite Wasps picking up a red card with 13 minutes left on the clock, the hosts would cross for a further two late tries to seal an emphatic victory.
Bath vs Newcastle Falcons:
Newcastle made life difficult for Bath at The Rec. as the former ran out 20-13 winners in their first victory of the season. The Falcons’ winger duo of Radwan and McGuigan ran the Bath defence ragged and were instrumental in building their team’s score.
“There’s not many players in the Premiership who are as fast as Adam (Radwan). His footwork is great too. He’s really good to watch at the moment,” said Falcons head coach Dave Walder.
“I am hoping he can keep up this level of development. He looks a real danger with every touch.
“He learnt a lot from the summer playing with England. He works very hard on his game. I think his in-game concentration has really improved, he’s a key player for us.”
Exeter vs Northampton:
Exeter find themselves with two losses from as many outings as they crashed to a 26-24 defeat against Northampton Saints.
The Saints are now two from two in the victories column which puts them third on the log behind Leicester and Harlequins.
George Furbank’ late penalty proved to be the difference between the two sides at the end.
Harlequins vs Worcester:
A great contest at the Twickenham Stoop saw Quins register their second victory of the campaign. Quins started well and looked to be in for an easy win before Worcester mounted an impressive comeback. Final score: 35-29.
Wasps vs Bristol Bears:
Wasps showed that they have been busy in their off season as they opened their campaign with a crushing win over Bristol Bears at the Ricoh Arena. The final whistle sounded with the score at 44-8 in Wasps’ favour as they blitzed their opponents with six tries to one.
London Irish vs Sale:
The 2021-22 campaign’s first stalemate as the Exiles and Sale played to a 31-all draw at the Brentford Community Stadium.
