Players you will not see at the Rio Olympics
- 2552
It has been 92 years since the rugby union was last played at the olympics, with this year's Olympics marking the debut of the sport since the 1924 Summer Olympics.
Here are a few rugby players who did not make the cut to represent their country at the rugby sevens:
Liam Messam (New Zealand)
All Blacks veteran Liam Messam has been omitted from the men's sevens squad that will represent New Zealand at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
After battling injury issues during the year, Messam failed to shine whenever he was on the field.
Though his dedications were to the sevens game, the 32-year-old will now rejoin his old Super Rugby side the Chiefs for the remainder of their 2016 title-chasing campaign.
Bryan Habana (South Africa)
After being named in the provisional 19-man Olympic training squad in June this year, Habana has also been left out of the 12-man Blitzboks squad for the Olympic Games in Rio.
The 2007 Rugby World Cup winner made his only two Springbok Sevens appearances in 2004, in Wellington and Los Angeles, a couple of months before his Test debut.
Quade Cooper (Australia)
Cooper's Olympic dreams were dashed back in May when the former Wallabies first-five was ruled out of selection for Australia's Rugby Sevens side at this year's Rio Games.
Capped 58 times, the 28-year-old was part of the Wallabies squad that finished runners-up at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
He then signed up to Australia's Sevens programme, seeking a spot on their Olympic squad, but his form was not enough for Olympics selection.
Henry Speight (Australia)
Speight was out of contention for the Rio Olympics after suffering a serious knee injury in a rugby sevens practice match in June.
The Fiji-born speedster, who has five Tests to his name, sustained a grade three medial ligament injury to his right knee last month, and is still in recovery.
