Four time champions Leinster ground out a 33-19 home win over Benetton in round 1 of the Champions Cup. Leinster opened the scoring with an early try, but Benetton hit back almost straight away with a try to lead 7-5. Leinster responded with their second try to hit the front again 12-7. Benetton then picked up a yellow card, with Leinster capitalizing on their numerical advantage with their third score to take a 19-7 lead into the break. Leinster got off to the perfect start in the second half, with a try extending their advantage to 26-7. Benetton hit back with their second try to get back into the match at 26-14. A Leinster try with a little over ten minutes remaining all but wrapped up the match, with Benetton managing a late consolation score in response.
