Having experienced the euphoric high of qualifying Team GB for the Rio Olympics on Saturday, Sunday proved anticlimactic for England in the London Sevens, and painfully so for captain Tom Mitchell who faces a six-month layoff.
At Twickenham, in the HSBC Sevens World Series finale, 116,219 revellers – a world record over two days – many adhering to the ‘galactic’ theme, made the most of the weekend sunshine before USA rained on the hosts’ parade, winning their maiden title in emphatic style, much to the delight of various aliens, Thunderbirds and the odd Chewbacca.
