NSW Waratahs coach Dan McKellar hopes Jake Gordon's re-appointment as captain can stabilise the club as it enters a new era in 2025.
With a changing roster and coaching staff, Gordon's naming as skipper remains one of the few consistents at Daceyville, taking on the role for a fifth straight year.
The scrumhalf's appointment was a clear selection for McKellar, coming off a breakthrough 2024 season that saw him established as the Wallabies' main number nine.
"He's a quality leader. I think for the most part, Jake's led the Waratahs really well over the last few years, which at times has been difficult," McKellar told reporters.
"It's a new chapter for the organisation and a new, fresh challenge so I think he deserves an opportunity to lead us forward.
"He's a good bloke, has good character, and cares a lot about the club. I look forward to working closely with him and the other leaders...I think there's been so much change in the building and the reality is, I think he's the best man for the job so that's why we've gone that way."
Gordon admitted past lean seasons with the club had taken their toll on him in the past.
However, the Sydney Uni product is ready to lead from the front as a star-studded Waratahs side looks to turn around their fortunes.
"It's been a bit of a rollercoaster, especially over the last five years as captaincy. In the years where things probably don't go to plan, you question some of the stuff throughout the year, which is normal for a captain who wants to improve and better the team but I'm, so supportive that the team and the coaching staff have backed me for another year," Gordon said,.
"I reviewed very hard when things don't go to plan and probably one thing I've learned over the time is things that I'm not so good at so you lean on people who have strengths in different areas.
"I've been lucky enough through the five years to deal with people like Michael Hooper, Dave Porecki and Hugh Sinclair to help.
"The back end of last year was definitely, yeah, took its toll emotionally but early in the conversation said to Dan, whatever he thinks best for the team, I'll do. I think it was over the break he came to me saying, 'I think you'd be best suited'. So I accepted that."
