Ireland were below their best on Saturday but gave new head coach Andy Farrell a winning start against Scotland.
Captain Johnny Sexton led by example with all 19 Ireland points in head coach Andy Farrell's 19-12 debut win over a wasteful Scotland in their Six Nations opener.
Stuart Hogg's drop over the line will be the most spoken about moment in the match but it was man of the match CJ Stander who ultimately decided things in the latter stages.
Ireland defended superbly in the latter stages and survived a long sequence of attack from Scotland following a surging break from Hamish Watson.
The break took Scotland into the 22 and from there they controlled the attack well constantly edging closer and closer to the line.
As the clock hit the 77th minute, Scotland were about three metres from the line with James Ryan making a chop tackle on Hamish Watson before CJ Stander got over the ball to win a crucial penalty with the score 19-12 in Ireland's favour.
Scotland did have another chance to seal the victory but after a long passage of play, well over 10 phases, the wind was well and truely knocked out of their sails.
This wasn't the only example of Stander coming up with a key pilfer in the game as he stopped a promising Scottish attack into the Ireland 22 just before half time.
Wales visit the Aviva in Round two of the Six Nations, arter the defending Six Nations champions claimed a comprehensive win over Italy while Scotland's task does not get any easier as they welcome World Cup runners-up England to Murrayfield.
