A sensational signing for Benetton Rugby. The green and white franchise is happy to announce the signing of Agustìn Creevy. The hooker, who will join the team on Monday 21 October, has signed a contract until 30 June 2025.
This is a high-value addition for the Lions. Creevy is one of the world's best hookers of the last 15 years. The 39-year-old Argentine has been the symbol of the Pumas and boasts an unrivalled CV.
Born in La Plata on March 15, 1985, 180 cm tall and weighing 108 kg, Creevy began playing rugby in Argentina with San Luis, the team of his hometown, in the role of third row. In 2007 he moved overseas for the first time, signing his first professional contract with the French team Biarritz . He stayed in France for two years, managing to play only six games, also due to a shoulder injury suffered in the second year. So in 2009 Agustìn's metamorphosis took place: he changed role, under the suggestion of the Argentina coach, who at the time was Santiago Phelan. Biarritz then released him from his contract, allowing the player to return to his country and adapt to the new position. Creevy thus returned to wear the jersey of his club team in La Plata.
Weeks pass and Creevy fully convinces in the role of hooker, thanks to a precise throw in the throw, a dominant presence in the scrum and an innate instinct to steer the drive to go for the try, in addition to a constant contribution in the open field. After adapting to the new role, Creevy returns to France to play for a short period with Clermont as a joker medical. In 2011 the Argentine plays with the Pampas XV and wins the Vodacom Cup 2011.
From the autumn of 2011 to 2013 Creevy returned to the French championship to wear the Montpellier jersey 34 times , scoring three tries. Two years later he joined the English team Worceste r; with the Warriors he played two seasons, collecting 28 appearances and four tries.
In 2016 Creevy returned to Argentina and became a pillar of the Jaguares franchise . In four years he accumulated 59 appearances, totaling 16 tries. In 2020 he decided to settle in England again, this time embracing the cause of London Irish . In London he played three seasons, scoring 28 important goals in 68 games. Last summer he moved to Sale Sharks , also in the Premiership. In the last season he accumulated 14 caps and 5 tries.
But it is with the national team that Creevy has written the most memorable chapters of his career. The hooker has participated in four Rugby World Cups with Argentina, in 2011, 2015, 2019 and the last in 2023.
In July 2014, Creevy was named captain of the Pumas and has represented the flag of Argentina for the last decade. Until the circle closed at the end of August on the occasion of the Rugby Championship during which he was the protagonist in the victory of the albiceleste against the All Blacks and then played his 110th appearance in the match against Australia. Recordman of appearances with the Argentina national team, Creevy is a true symbol of Argentine rugby.
Now Agustìn has decided to live a new chapter in his rugby life, accepting the offer from Benetton Rugby and will wear the Lions' shirt until June 30, 2025.
“I am really very happy to be part of the Treviso family. It is a club where there are many of my friends and above all I have a lot of respect for the team. In recent years it has grown a lot and has had great championships. The URC is the only tournament I have left to play in my career, and personally Italy is a country that I really like, its people and its history make it an incredible place to live and above all to play rugby. My goal is to play a lot, have fun, be able to share my experience with the younger guys and why not, fight to aim for great goals” explains Agustìn Creevy .
"We are very happy to be able to formalize the purchase of a player of Creevy's caliber, a profile that certainly needs no introduction. His signing reflects our desire to insert an experienced player into a delicate role such as that of hooker. Furthermore, in the department today we have Maile, Bernasconi and Manfredi who in the coming months could be selected by their respective national teams and we have the duty to be ready should this happen. Last but not least, Agustìn will certainly be able to act as a "mother hen" for the young players who orbit in our squad, in a role that also requires the right maturation times for the players who cover it" commented the general manager Antonio Pavanello .
