Alby Mathewson signs for Toulon

Former All Black international scrum-half Alby Mathewson has signed for Toulon on an initial one-year deal, the Top14 club announced on Monday.

Mathewson, capped on four occasions for New Zealand, has agreed a deal that includes an option for a second season.

The club revealed that Mathewson would arrive at the club this week, to provide additional half-back cover for the French giants.

Escande is set for a spell on the sidelines after injuring an ankle against Scarlets in the European Champions Cup at the weekend.

Mathewson has played Super Rugby for Western Force, Hurricanes and the Blues, while he had a stint in England last season with Bristol.
