The Reds take a 19-13 lead over the Waratahs into halftime. The opening ten minutes saw the sides cross for a try apiece to see the score deadlocked at 7-7. The Reds went over for a second score to hit the front midway through the half. The Waratahs then picked up a yellow card, with the hosts capitalizing immediately with their third try to lead 19-7. The Waratahs would keep the scoreboard ticking over, slotting two penalties to trail by just six points at the break.
