Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin, hosts this opening round ITM Cup southern derby clash between Otago and local rivals Canterbury.
Otago struggled last season, winning only three out of their ten matches in the Championship and finishing just two competition points ahead of bottom placed Bay of Plenty. However, the region will still be on cloud nine following the Highlanders Investec Super Rugby championship victory.
Canterbury failed to make it seven ITM Cup titles in a row by bowing out to Tasman in the Premiership semi-finals last season. They have prepared well, defeating Wellington 50-33 in their first preseason match, followed by a 21-29 defeat to a near full strength Counties side. The visitors should therefore start as favourites in this encounter.
These teams last met in 2014 at the same venue with Otago going down 16-23 after a hard fought battle.
