The defending Premiership champions Canterbury host Auckland in a repeat of the 2015 Premiership Final in round 1 of the Mitre 10 Cup.
Neither side managed a win in their warm up games as Canterbury went down to Otago 22-24 while also losing to Wellington 14-43 while Auckland were defeated by North Harbour 21-45 and Bay of Plenty 21-22.
The last times these teams met was of course in the 2015 Premiership Final with Canterbury emerging narrow 25-23 victors to lift the cup.
This match should be an absolute cracker between two Premiership heavyweights with both desperate to get their campaigns off to the perfect start.
Head to head these sides have played 97 times, with Canterbury winning 45 and Auckland 47 with 5 draws.
