Bristol Bears and RC Toulon have met twice previously in the Challenge Cup during the pool stage in 2008/09. Bristol won 39-11 at home and 37-19 at Stade Mayol.

Toulon take a 10-16 lead over the Bristol Bears into halftime. Bristol got off to the perfect start with a try off the opening kickoff just 16 seconds in. The Bears dream start continued with a penalty shortly after to open up a 10-0 lead after only 4 minutes of play. Toulon hit back with a try from a Bristol error and slotted a penalty to level things up at 10-10 midway through the half. Toulon would finish the half brightly, slotting two late penalties for a six point advantage at the break. Bristol have had other opportunities to score, but dropped the ball over the line off a dominant maul and also crashed over in the corner but the final pass was forward.
