Perry, who hails from Alstonville, went to New Zealand with his brother and sister, and slept under bridges.
After a pre-season trial game for the Vikings, Perry asked coach Brad Harris to drop him off on the highway where he hitchhiked his way back home.
The driver who picked him up decided Perry was worth investing in and became his personal sponsor.
In 2014 he was selected in the Australian U20s side to play in the Junior World Cup in New Zealand after a series of impressive performances, with many predicting a bright future for him.
