Smith began playing rugby at Stirling County and helped them lift the National Youth Cup in 2013.
The flanker played nine times for Scotland U20s and his sister Hannah is a current Scotland international playing her club rugby for Hillhead Jordanhill.
Smith is a product of the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy and signed his first professional contract with Glasgow in January 2016, making his debut against the Ospreys the following month.
After 15 appearances for Glasgow Warriors and two tries, in February 2018, Matt signed a two-year contract extension at Scotstoun until at least May 2020.
As of December 2019, Smith has played 25 games for Glasgow and has scored 2 tries.
