According to reports Lions captain, Warren Whiteley is set to become the first player to be rewarded with a national contract by new Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus.
Whiteley has been played and captained the Boks without one, but according to Rapport, Erasmus is keen to keep the No 8 in South Africa.
Erasmus and Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli are negotiating a dual contract with Whiteley’s agent, and a deal is expected to be reached soon.
A dual national and franchise contract will force Whiteley to scale down on his playing schedule, while he will also not be allowed to play in Japan during the off-season.
