The Melbourne Rebels are in a position to sign two of Australia's biggest names next year with Matt To’omua set to leave the franchise.
According to a report by Fox Sports, To'omua will be released a year early by the Rebels which will open up funds for the Super Rugby side to sign prop Taniela Tupou and centre Samu Kerevi.
The report adds that Rugby Australia is set to transition into a new contracting model, where the national body will sign up to 35 players themselves ahead of the 2024 season and the franchises would compensate.
With To’omua departing a year early and Dane Haylett-Petty retiring due to concussions, the Rebels will have funds available with the pair reportedly on lucrative contracts.
The Rebels are hoping the arrival of Reds hooker Alex Mafi will help entice Taniela Tupou down south with Rebels' GM Nick Stiles also believed to have a close relationship with Tupou.
Meanwhile, Samu Kerevi will be high on the wishlist for all the Australian Super Rugby teams as he looks to return home from Japan. He has one season remaining on his contract with Suntory Sungoliath in Japan and is expected to return Down Under.
Fox Sports say that it’s understood that Kerevi is seeking a long-term deal until the British and Irish Lions Tour in 2025.
To’omua’s departure does open up some funds to sign the 2021 World Rugby Player of the Year Nominee but the Rebels can expect competition for his signature both locally and abroad.
