The Stormers bring their Losing Streak to halt in Melbourne - Talking Points

The Stormers caused a bit of an upset this morning as they picked up a win in the very last game of their Australian tour against the Melbourne Rebels.

The Cape side, who have lost many of their star players due to injury and Springbok rotation policy,  scored five tries in their 41-24 win and made over 100 tackles in the match. Here are some of the talking points in the match.

Leyds Important Contribution

Dillyn Leyds got the Stormers off to a magnificent start in Melbourne as he picked up a loose through kick by the Rebels. The fullback carved through the Aussie side's defence and managed to score a try under the posts.



The No.15 also played a nifty hand which saw Juarno Augustus score his first try in Super Rugby and then later showed some vision as he put Springbok centre Damian de Allende in a gap to score.


27th minute - Tupou knock on the line for the Rebels

The game could’ve been very different if the Australian side scored in the 27th minute of the match.  Semisi Tupou had brilliant opportunity to level things up in the match but knock the ball on the tryline after a lovely cross kick from Quade Cooper.

Stormers Impressive Defense

In the past three weeks, the Stormers have lead numerous amounts of tries but against the Rebels, they should some might and determination. Robbie Fleck’s men managed to defend 12 phases of attack on the edge of their tryline which ultimately kept them ahead going into the first half.

The Stormers did leak a few tries in the game but the effort in defence was certainly the making of the positive result. The South African side made 145 tackles in the match and had a success rate of 88%.

Cooper Error Allows Nel To Score

 

Although the result cannot be blamed on Quade Cooper his error did come at an important time in the match and ultimately gave the Stormers all the momentum.
